CommunionFire in Scripture
Chapter One
Eyes Were Opened & We Recognized Him
Drifting to thoughts of the Emmaus road trying to imagine what I might have seen. Cleopas and Mary walked with Jesus for 7 miles. The first half of the story is about blindness. It is like amnesia. They do not and cannot recognize that this stranger speaking with them is Jesus. Yet, Jesus is their nephew. He spends 7 miles opening up the scriptures about Himself. The further they got from Jerusalem the less ability they seemed to have to recognize or remember Jesus. He grew up with them as a child and young man.
They followed His ministry and were followers. They were grieved and were mourning His death, were numbered among those disciples who first heard the tomb was empty and yet there He was.
We should note that Jesus' PR team didn't have Him announce His resurrection to 50,000 at Jerusalem Stadium. There were no news papers or news broadcasts to announce the Jesus had done it! He rose from the dead on His own! No. He showed up on a country road to share a long walk with up until now a pretty unknown Biblical couple. As He approached them He said, "What's up?"
They responded matter of fact, "You haven't heard?" Then they detailed all that had happened. They even reported that they had gotten word that He was not in the tomb and that some had seen the "pr angels". Here was the resurrected Lord that they were grieving and yet they were 'held from recognizing Him'. He said, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!" Even a reproof from the risen Christ didn't awaken their faith.
What kind of stubborn blindness was this!
This is how Jesus chose to begin His disclosure to the world about conquering sin, hell and the grave! Cleaopas and Mary had a 7 mile Bible Study on the Law and the Prophets by the Risen Son of God! They did not see.
They were talking with God for 7 miles - no prayer meeting could ever be any better than this! They did not see.
God spoke to them for 7 miles which was probably more prophesy than Isaiah had in His whole life! Still, they did not see.
They didn't have a clue. There's none so blind as those who will not see. Perhaps based on Jeremiah 5:21.
The greatest event in human history goes unnoticed and unrecognized by a couple who were close to Him for probably over 30 years. They were considered followers and numbered among the disciples. Yet, they might as well have been blind.
The only way any of us can see Jesus and recognize Him is for God to open our eyes and give us the ability to recognize Him.
So they got to Emmaus. (the town's name means warm springs) The couple invited Jesus to have something to eat at their home. While there Jesus blessed and broke the bread. Keep in mind neither of them was at the last supper. This is the first act of Jesus in the resurrection. He told the disciples to 'do this to remember Him'. He was repeating the same thing now and in that moment we are told "Their eyes were opened" AND "They recognized Him!"
The Miracle of CommunionFire is Resurrected Jesus first act in the resurrection!
The Last Act With the 11 and His First Act in the Resurrection with His family, as a couple who invited them into their home without knowing who He was! The name of Cleopas means “Celebration of the Father” or “Glory of the Father”
30 When he was at table with them! (see Psalm 23)
1. He took the bread
2. and blessed
3. and broke it
4. and gave it to them.
5. 31 And their eyes were opened,
6. and they recognized him.
7. And he vanished from their sight. (As soon as they saw & recognized Him)
Overflow: The Scriptures Come Alive - The First Remembrance!
32 They said to each other, (remembering) “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?”
They couldn't keep the “the revelation of the resurrected Jesus” to themselves… Imagine what they talked about as they sped back to Jerusalem! The Overflow must have included reviewing all that Jesus spoke to them! Do you think they were excited when they got back to Jerusalem to share with the disciples? Watch what happened:
33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.
Jesus Appears to His Disciples
36 As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”
CommunionFire is what happens, just like at Cleopas and Mary's house in Emmaus, when we break the blessed bread in Communion. Our eyes are opened and we recognize Jesus!
When was the last time you broke bread and shared the cup at home with your spouse or on your own? The Miracle of CommunionFire is when Easter Happens!
Jesus said, "Do this" then watch what happens!
