About Kristin: Kristin and her husband Devon and 5 kids live in Baltimore City. She has experienced church in the sweetest of places…on the 3rd floor of Jahva House (a coffee shop she owned with her husband) in a room mixed with Atheists, Wiccans, Buddhists and Christians, in a secret church in China, at the city garbage dump in the Philippines, breaking bread in Ireland with people from many nations and at an underground skate park in her city. The more obscure the sanctuary, the more comfortable Kristin is in representing His church. She currently is in community with a rag tag mix of people who daily strive to be ‘Jesus with skin on.’ She’s also pretty passionate about food, design and décor. She cofounded LoveFeast Table (http://www.lovefeasttable.com) and LoveFeast Shop (http://shop.lovefeast.com) with her best friend, Chris Ann.
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, there’s just something about that name.
I found myself in church today, saying Jesus over and over again. I have worshipped for years, declaring His goodness, feeling washed by the oceans of grace He covers me with, shouting Alleluia, but today, His name was so precious and rolled off my tongue as if it was discovered anew.
In uttering His name over and over again, somehow in this five letter word, the depth of who He is, took shape in my heart. I was flooded with emotions of falling in love, of wanting to be on my knees in utter awe, of feeling the gaze of His piercing eyes. I felt faith rise up in me like a tidal wave and wash over me with the tenderness of a Father’s hand. I felt Him take my hand and usher me down the road to show me new sights along the way. It was intimate, powerful and fresh.
I realized it had been a long time since I meditated on His name.
Jesus.
The scriptures talk about the power of this name.
In the name of Jesus, we are saved. No other name has been given that authority or power to rescue us from ourselves or from the turbulent sea of the life around us.
“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4: 12
In the name of Jesus, we are made righteous. A name, a single name has the power to make that which is so wrong, right.
“But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Cor. 6:11
In the name of Jesus, the broken is fixed. Those who have chronic pain are healed. The single mom, who doesn’t have enough to feed her children, now has more than enough. He multiplies the crumbs, He parts the waters, He comforts those who are sad and the name of Jesus sets those who feel trapped by life, free.
“While you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” Acts 4:30
In the name of Jesus, our sins are no longer before us. Jesus, Jesus. He takes away all the wrong that I’ve done, and doesn’t just erase it, but deletes it from existence, as if it never happened.
“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Matt 1:21
In the name of Jesus, demons flee. Demons of fear, rebellion, depression…the very name makes them go away. It doesn’t take special powers or years of studying the scriptures, just the name of Jesus.
“The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” Luke 10:17
In the name of Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes. He’s not conjured by special ceremonies or training in the ways of the supernatural. The very name of Jesus ushers in the Holy Spirit who deposits gifts like love, joy, kindness, peace, goodness, gentleness and meekness.
“Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38
In the name of Jesus, you can learn with the help of the Holy Spirit…who comes by speaking the name of Jesus…about all things and help you remember all that Jesus spoke to you. He will teach you. The Master, Creator, All Knowing, will teach you.
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” John 14:26
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. There’s just something about that name. And today, I’m finding it’s more than enough.
